焦娟
Step 1 Lead-in
Good morning, boys and girls. First I’d like to play a little guessing game with you. I will give you some information about two persons. What you need to do is to guess who I am talking about. Listen carefully. He comes from Twain. His performances were four times selected to the CCTV Spring Festival Gala Show.He plays magic.Who is he? Yes, Liu Qian. Do you like his performances? Yeah wonderful. Now let’s come to the second person. He was a prisoner. Why he was in prison? Did he do something bad? I don’t know.Go on.He passed away on December 5th, 2013.He devoted his life to helping black people get the same rights as the white people. Guys, who is he? Yes, he is Nelson Mandela.
Step 2 Pre-reading
Just now I introduced two well-known persons to you. Now I have a question. Are both of them great people? No? Are famous people and great people the same? Some of you say yes. Some say no. You all have different ideas. It doesn’t matter. Let’s come to today’s text and see whether Elias’ story will give you some idea concerning this issue.
Step 3 While-reading
Now please go through the first few lines and tell me who is being talked about in Elias’ story? So guys, is Elias the only person talked about in Elias’ story? No, and also Nelson Mandela. Boys and girls now I want you to do some scanning and find the answer as quickly as possible. What help did Mandela offer to black people in 1952? What did Elias do in 1963?Remember you don’t have to read word for word. Key words will help you. Go ahead. Finished? So what help did Mandela offer to black people in 1952? Yes, he offered legal guidance to Elias, helping him keep his job and stay in Johannesburg. Great. What did Elias do in 1963? Yeah, he helped Mandela blow up the government buildings in 1963. Exactly. Guys, have you noticed the answers lie in the first and last paragraph? So I am wondering what happened during the 11 years?
Now I want you to do careful reading. Please find out the changes of Elias’ life and feelings before Elias met Nelson Mandela, after Mandela helped Elias and Elias joined ANC. Have you finished your reading? So what was Elias’ life like? You can describe it from the aspects of his family, his ability and his job. Yes, you please. He came from a poor family. He couldn’t read or write. He might lose his job because he didn’t have a passbook to live in Johannesburg. You give a very comprehensive description of Elias’ life. So we can summarize Elia’s life as poor, difficult and worrying. How about his feelings? Hopeless, nervous, great, sad, worried. Let’s come to Stage 2- after Mandela helped Elias. Now guys please go through Para.3 and tell me what help Mandela offered to Elias. Yes, he told Elias to get the correct papers to get the passbook to stay in Johannesburg. Which word did he use to describe the day? How did Elias feel about his future? Yes, hopeful. Have you seen the changes? Now let’s come to the last stage –after Elias joined ANC. Which adjectives will you use to describe Elias’ life? You please. Dangerous but meaningful. I like your expression. Why do you say so? Could you give me some supporting points? He blew some government buildings. If he were caught, he could be put in prison. How about meaningful? Because what he did could help black people achieve their dream of making black and white people equal. Wonderful, now could you use more words to describe Elias feelings? Notice, he was a poor and helpless guy. He needed Mandela’s help to keep his job and stay inJohannesburg. Now he became a person who could help other people as well. How did he feel about himself at this stage now? Proud. Wonderful. So guys let’s go over the changes of Elia’s feelings. At first he was sad, hopeless and worried. When he met Mandela he became hopeful. After he joined ANC, he grew proud of himself. So who brought these changes to Elias? Yes, Mandela. Elias followed his step and devoted himself to the great cause of fighting for the same right as white people have.
But was Elias just a particular example? How about other black people’s lives and feelings at that time? Now please go through Para. 4- Para. 6 and find out the changes before and after ANC was founded. Pay attention to the actions of black people at different stages. So before that black people could not vote or choose their leaders. They could not get the jobs they wanted. In a word they had no right at all. Did they do anything to change? No, they just accept the situation. How about later after ANC was founded? Yes, they choose to attack the law in a peaceful way. And then they answered violence with violence. Who brought these changes? Yes, also Mandela. He is indeed a great person. Do you agree?
Step 4 Post-reading:
Now I’d like to give a group work. Suppose you are Nelson Mandela. Elias was hurt when blowing up the government building yesterday. You are going to give a speech about Elias. Here the first and last paragraph have been given. My fellow South Africans, today I want to share the story of our hero, Elias, who was hurt yesterday…. I am proud of Elias, of you all. Let’s unite to realize the ideal for which we are prepared to die. What you need to do is to complete the whole speech. Guys, got it? No, go ahead. Ok time is up. Who wants to have a try? You please. Big applause for him. So guys do you like his speech? Yeah, I also like it. He gave a detailed and vivid speech. Besides I admire his voice very much. So powerful. Thank very much.
